The Nova Marathon Challenge

In case you missed it last fall here is a link to the PBS Program Nova's Marathon Challenge. Whether you've never run a marathon, are thinking of it or are a seasoned marathoner if this video doesn't inspire then nothing will. Also if you ran Boston last year it will bring back memories.

Run a Marathon & Drink Wine

Do you like to drink wine, we know you like to run. Why not combine the two at the Marathon Du Medoc in France. This years race is on September 6th and run through the vinyards of Bourdeaux. Water stations are accompanied by wine stations if you prefer and finishers get a bottle of wine as a reward.Registration begins today (Feb 27th) at www.marathondumedoc.com

Chilly Half

You can tell race season is coming back to Ontario when we have 2 races on consecutive weekends. This coming weekend is the Chilly Half Marathon in Burlington. Should be interesting as they have changed the start finish form previous years. A lot of RoadRunners are on their way down there this weekend so good luck to all. Lets have some pictures and race reports afterwards.

The Lost Dutchman Marathon Report

Apache Junction, Arizona

After a week of heavy rains that had threatened to change the route of the course, we woke up on Sunday morning to beautiful clear skies. An early start to the day 4am and then off to the rodeo grounds to catch the buses. That was when we learned that the start would be at the originally planned location, and was it ever worth it. We arrived in the dark to "Don's Base Camp" in the Superstition Mountains, where the organizers had set up many small camp fires of burning mesquite. My clothes still smell of it. Gradually the sun started to come up and that was when we realized that we were surrounded by "mountains". The 7am start went off without a hitch and we followed red dirt (mud at times) packed roads for the first 6.5 miles mostly downhill and through a few large "puddles". Once we hit Hwy 60 the sun was up, but not at all hot. Ran through some beautiful neighbourhoods with huge Cactii everywhere. Here was where started to make up for all the early downhill. At mile 23 was the Lost Dutchmans revenge, a 100 yard hill straight up. Most people walked up it, including yours truly. Eventualy arriving back to the rodeo grounds to a suprisingly large crowd. A good event that I would recommend to everyone. The only complaint I had was the egg burritos as the post race food. So I went for steak and Guiness.

Congrats to Keith!!!

The Barrie Roadrunners congratulate Keith Lascelles for his 22nd OVERALL in the Lost Dutchman Marathon in Phoenix, Arizona on Sunday February 17th. Keith finished the marathon with a 3:24 earning him a 5th Overall in his age category, and throwing the Americans into a dizzy, scratching their brows, muttering underneath their breath, "where's this Barrie, On?".

It's BAD ; it's Jay's Peak

Badass Marathon is a 33.0 mile, mostly off-road, run. The race starts by climbing 4,000 feet over 9 miles to the summit of Jay Peak. Then racers head downhill for 4 miles, descending 2,000 feet on Ullr's Dream ski trail, continue on a series of trails through the woods connecting to Wilderness Village back road, and through Jay Village. Then racers will cross fields and rivers, follow a deer trail, and run in a brook. Yes, in the brook, for about 3 miles. A bushwhack and beaver dam leads to a swim across a 50-foot river, (aided by volunteers and a cable), and then racers will reach aid station 6. It is advisable to re-fuel and rest at aid station 6, because the worst mud hole in the world is yet to come on the last eight miles of the course. Are we MAD? stay tuned for more from Scott, Keith, Kevin & yours truly.
