Jingle Bell run 2008

It was a chilly 6:30 am December morning in Barrie when 40 runners (and non-runners) boarded the school bus bound for the first ever Jingle Bell run. The organizers goal was to get 1500+ people to run 5km in Santa suits, so the race entry fee included your very own Santa suit as well as a real breakfast. We like to call it the Santa Suit run and it was the first one to be held in Canada.

Talk about fun. From the moment the gang arrived on time (including "Steen the Runner" even if he was at the wrong meeting point - thank goodness for cell phones) at the Spirit Catcher parking lot it was all giggles and excitment. Part way through our trip, when everyone was getting back on the bus after a bladder break, the sun came up. That's when the fun stepped up a notch. Everyone started to try on their Santa suits. This is not as easy as it sounds considering it was a moving child sized school bus filled with grown ups . . . or should I say adults because dressing up in a Santa suit makes you feel like a kid getting ready for Halloween. By the time everyone made the necessary adjustments and personailzed adournments to the generously sized Santa suits we were pulling into downtown Burlington. We knew we were in the right place by the growing number of Santa sightings on every street corner.

We gathered everyone off of the bus for a quick group photo opportunity. The weather was warm (a relative comparison to Barrie) and sunny. Barely any snow on the ground anywhere. Fantastic conditions for a morning 5 km run. Standing at the start line all you can see is red and white Santa Clauses. Everyone looks alike and are in the same good spirits. You cross the start line and before you know it there's the finish line. Done . . . just like Christmas morning, almost. Breakfast was an amazing meal and not you standard post race grub. Oh no . . . there were scambled eggs, bacon, sausages, hash browns , buns and coffee (lots of coffee). We waddled back the bus and recounted the days events. When we got back to Barrie someone commented that we had just been gone for 8 hours and spent 3 hours of those hours on a bus, all just to run a 5 km race . . . and it was worth ever moment of it. See everyone next year . . . and bring a friend! For a video of the event go to http://v-card.ca/video/VRPro/index.html

JFK Race Report

My first impressions of JFK are of a low tech, but well run race. It seems to attract runners of all abilities, ages and from far a field. In my previous post I had discussed the issue of temperature and weather to wear shorts or not. Up to half an hour prior to the race, I was still debating. I eventually decided to leave the tights on, boy was I glad of that. Kevin and myself got to Boonsboro and the high school gym a little late. The pre race briefing had already started, that was when I realized that I had left my sunglasses in the car. So I ran to get them and came back as everyone was filing out of the school and towards the start in downtown Boonsboro. When I foudn Kev still in the school he was talking to Dave Champion from Kitchener, who we had come across in the Ontario Ultra Series. He was looking for a similar time to us, around 8 hours, but he had to go to the porta john prior to the race so we left him, hopefully to see him later. It was about half a kilometer walk to the start, but that gave us time to get accustomed to the cool air, and after a while that felt OK.
The gun went off right on time and we slowly started the climb up to Mt. Washington just as the sun was coming up.
The first 9k are more or less straight up, a few dips here and there, but mostly up. We took it farily easy, but still found ourselves passing lots of people as we climbed, once we passed the first aid station we found ourselves on paved trail and climbed more and we walked a lot of the up hills here. To the top of the mountain we felt good, but had to keep reminding each other we had a long way to go. Once the paved trail ended we found ourselves on single track which over time got more technical as we went, to the point where you really had to watch your footing. On this part of the course I got talking to a young guy from Knoxville, TN called CJ, he was only 18. Finally after about 25k we emerged to an aid station which signalled the start of the 26.3 miles of tow path along the old C & O canal. A this point we crossed the rail tracks which have stopped runners in the past, as well as today. We heard trains before we got there and later. We also saw a train go by not long after being on the trail.
The Tow Path was easily the hardest part of the race as far as I was concerned, not for the difficulty of the terrrain or anything, but mentally it was tough get through this part, you get a couple of hours into a race and still know that you have 30k or more before you get a change of scenery. Through out this part of the race we were continually passing or being passed by the same people, most of them seemed to be veterans. Our strategy (if you could call it that) was to run for as long as possible, then walk for a short while, then run again. Along the tow path I thought it might warm up some, but no. The wind was still in our face and it was still cold, glad I left the tights on. This was the first time in a race that I tried hot (actually warm) soup, and it was great. Easy to digest and warmed the insides a bit. Also started to drink Coke at the aid stations. (Probably the most Coke I have ever drank in day since I was a kid).
When we got to the 2nd last aid station on the tow path, there seemed to be a back log of runners. So I didn't linger long and soon we found ourselves alone, I started to second guess whether or not we were on the right trail, but there were no other options. So on we went and gradually we caught up to more runners. We hit the last aid station on the path and turned up a long climb to the "rolling hills", 8 miles to go. At first I found this part hard, Kevin would run ahead and wait at each aid station (which were getting closer together at this point). Now hot chocolate and potatoes were offered, Kevin was getting into the M&M's big time. As we hit the last 3 - 4 miles I seemed to get a spurt of energy and pushed hard and now Kevin started to have issues. Anyway we beat the rolling hills and turned the last corner and pushed it for the last 1/2k into the finish. Finishing at 8:39, 97th & 98th place out 1000 runners. We ran into Dave again and he had finished in 8:08, his better training regime had paid off for him. It's Tuesday now and as I sit here, the stiffness is subsiding and I'm feeling rather good. I didn't feel any worse than if I'd run a marathon, and feel that it I could do that again easily. As I've heard from others, these Ultras are mostly mental and I found that out from about 30k in to about 70k, after that it was toughing it out to finish, which we did.

Marathon Maniacs

If you can answer yes to more than one of these questions you may need to visit the Marathon Maniacs website:

Are you addicted to running marathons?

Do your thoughts switch to the next scheduled race immediately after finishing a marathon?

Are you signed up for more than one race right now?

Do you know specifics about many of the marathons? Dates, courses, years run, etc.?

Do you know the story of how the marathon got started? Also why the course is 26.2 miles?

Do you read books on marathons like Marathon and Beyond?

Is www.marathonguide.com book marked on your computer? Do you look at the race schedule more than once a week?

Do you start to feel down when you haven't run a marathon in a while?

Are your closets and dressers filled with marathon t-shirts?

Do you have so many marathon medals that you've run out of room on the hook they hang from?

When asked about your racing from none running people, do you find yourself talking with great passion to the point that the person that asked the question regrets ever asking?

Have you run marathons on back to back weekends? Or better yet back to back days?

Have you run a marathon as a training run? Or just to pace a friend?

When asked by loved ones what your plans are for the weekend, you feel guilty telling them your running another marathon so you tell them "it's only a half this weekend"?

Do you plan all your vacations around a marathon race?

Well if you answered yes to any of these questions, you just may be a Marathon Maniac!!!

A Midsummer Night's Run - Disney 2009

James Rooney is attempting to raise $2500 to support paediatric research in arthritis for children. The following is his letter with links to sites where donations can be made or more information found. Please help support James in this great effort.

Normally these types of runs go to centralized Fund Raising units and the money is distributed evenly across North America. There is nothing wrong with that format and I applaud their ongoing efforts. This opportunity gives me the ability to support a local cause and see the money go to local use.

Please help me reach my fundraising goal by making a donation. My goal is to raise $2500 so please help me on this wonderful journey of giving back what has been so freely given to me.

Thank you in advance.

James (Marathon Kid) Rooney
Team Midsummer Night

I wanted to make you aware of an event being held to support paediatric research in arthritis for children in Canada and around the world.

With your support, we can help advance the research even further and give children the opportunity to better treatments, and maybe some day, a cure.

Secure on line donations can be made with VISA, MasterCard or American Express and an electronic tax receipt will be sent to you by email. You can make an online donation now at:

Indy Marathon Report

Well, Indianapolis is a beautiful city and hosts a very nice race through the suburb of Lawrence. This scenic race starts & finishes in Historic Fort Harrison and on Saturday October 18th myself and Brendan Kavanagh lined up to take part with 5600 others competing in the various events, including the half and relay. After a total of 9 hours driving over 2 days we arrived safely and went to the expo, probably the most dissapointing part of the weekend. Not very big at all, but still a few freebies. That night Brendan found his Garmin not working and all attempts to find a remedy failed. So Brendan was to rely on a regular watch and a pace band, how old school! Luckliy I still had my Garmin. So between us we both planned to run sub 3 hour marathons. In the morning we grabbed our Starbucks coffee and headed to the start, set up my Garmin virtual partner to run 3 hours and we were ready. It was a cool and partly sunny morning, perfect for a marathon.
Shortly after 8:30am we were off and running, maintaining a "comfortable" 4:10/km pace through the first 8 miles or so through some nice subdivisions and other parts of Fort Harrison, we then entered Fort Harrison State Park and some nice paved tree lined bike paths. This is where my Garmin crapped out, a "memory full" alert came up and I had to delete everything including my virtual partner. This left me with only my pace and Brendan for support. A few hills through the park slowed the pace a bit, but we got back up to speed before leaving the halfers as they cut off to the finish. We headed on to the out and back through more parks and tree lined streets. Still the pace was good a couple of gut checks and some support from each other and we were good. The turn around was at 19 miles and we turned into an unsuspected head wind. From here it was going to be where we would either fail or go on to new heights. Brendan let me know at 19 miles we were about 40 seconds back of 2:58 pace, still doing well. We maintained that through 21 miles, but at 22 we had dropped to 1:00 minute off pace, but still under 3 hours. At 23 miles I asked Brendan what our time was, 2:37. We would have to maintain at least 4:30/km to come in under 3, so I picked it up a bit. I didn't realize it at the time, but Brendan had stopped to water the bushes. Eventually I noticed his presence no longer there, but I did not dare look around. At 25 miles we came up to the last hill and that slowed myself down, but I got to the top and tried to put the hammer down (at least as much as possible at that point). Couple of turns and back towards the finish area, I knew it was going to be close. A few weeks ago I had a dream of finishing this race in 3:00:01 and was hoping that wasn't a premonition. I turned the last corner to see the time as 2:59:30 with about 100m to go, although I ran as fast as possible at that point I cam across the line at 3:00:04! What would my chip time be? At last I looked around. No Brendan yet, he came around the corner in a couple of minutes and finished in 3:02:24. Surprisingly we both felt good, Brendan's wife Marie joked about us feeling so good we should drive to Columbus and run the marathon there on Sunday.

Not a chance. Later that evening we finally got the chip times and I had finished in 2:59:59.5, unbelievably .5 seconds under 3 hours. Brendan came second in his age group and I came 5th. Although Brendan set a Pb by 1 minute, missing the sub 3 goal left a bit of a bitter taste. We both know that there was more in us.After re checking the results it seems we came 28th & 32nd, but even more impressive was that we moved up from 39th & 40th at the half. Otherwise a great day at a great race, and I would recommend this to anyone who is interested. Indianapolis Marathon link

Toronto Marathon

There were a lot of Barrie RoadRunners taking part in the Toronto Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday. Including Kevin O'Neill as part of the Team Diabetes relay team. They came 2nd over all in 2:36. Otherwise we had some outstanding performances on a great day for racing. See below for results:

What a Comeback!

A couple of years ago Terry McFarlane broke his leg after being hit by a car while out on long Sunday run in February, after a long recovery Terry ran his first Marathon since the accident on Sunday. At the Prince Edward County Marathon he ran a great 3:33 which I beleive would also be a personal best. Great job Terry.
The results are Danny Churchward running a very impressive 3:40 and Sandra Lalonde coming in at 4:12. Well done everyone.
Another great accomplishment was Gayle Blackburn finishing 3rd in her age group in the half marathon 2:27 in the 60-69 age group.

Run for the Toad

Saturday October 4th was the 7th Run for the Toad at the Pinehurst Lake Conservation Area south of Cambridge. On a perfect Running day we had numerous runners competing in the different distances. Finishing the 50k were Kevin O'Neil, Keith Lascelles, Brendan Kavanagh, Roger Ison and Sylvie Phillips. In the 25k we had Clarence Wang, Oliver Owens (aka Kevin Burke), Cathie Burke, Kathy Pombiere and Neil Phillips. IN the 25k walk were Esther Ison, Joan Lascelles and Sue Leigh. A good day was had by all at a great event. The picture below is a shot of the "medal".

just a little about Ultras

Hi Runners, Jamie here. This past summer my friends Kevin O'Neil & Keith Lascelles introduced me to "Ultras". Well it was an introduction actually to Ultra X Extreme running. We ran Jay's Peak in Vermont. Talk about 53Km of Fun? I'm hooked. Since then I have purchased myself proper Trail Runners and been scurrying the web devouring information about Ultra Marathons. It would appear from this rookie's vantage point that Ultras in the U.S. is huge sport with a huge following. In Canada, not as popular. Why ? I'm trying to answer that riddle. I like to leave you with a few web sites to check out. www.ACU100k.com (Association of Canadian Ultra Marathons). www.Journeyheretohere.com (an ultra race also called Ghost Town in New Mexico that has 28 spots left and is taking place on January 18, 2009). When you check this race out, you have to click on the course map. I love it. www.planetmarathon.worldpress.com (an interesting blog).

Jay Marathon Madness

The results for the Jay Marathon are finally posted at: http://www.ultimatexc.com/results/MARRESULT.xls Only 218 finishers out of 400
Well, 5 of us went, we saw and we conquered (or maybe we were conquered). Any way you look at it I think all 5 of us will say that it was the most difficult race we have ever finished. At least we were able to finish, for some that wasn't the case. Apparently the 5 hour cut off limit at the 19 mile mark was strictly enforced even though the course was tougher, 7 days of rain prior to the race created more mud, water etc. That meant a lot of competitors were pulled off the course. As it was Scott and Oliver only made the cut off by minutes. As difficult as it was we did what we accomplished, finished and laughed about it, and had a Guinness afterwards.
Finish times were Kevin O'Neill - 7:26, Keith Lascelles - 7:33, Jamie Nielsen - 7:36, Scott Whynot & Oliver Owens - 9:15. The mud, the walk up the mountain, the brook running, the beaver swamp, the river crossing all made this a memorable experience. Look for pictures coming soon.

This Weekend

This weeknd will see 5 of our members, who have been christened "The Jay Peak Nutbars", travel to Jay, Vermont to compete in the Jay Mountain Marathon. This crazy race is actually 33 miles (53k) of mud, swamp, mud, a mountain, mud, bushwalking, mud, brook running, mud, river crossing, mud and climbing, oh yeah and there maybe a bit of mud. After this weeks "lovely" weather the mud should be nice and deep. Luckily they say mud is good for the complexion so you should see an improvement in the looks of Kevin, Keith, Jamie, Oliver and Scott when they get back, if they survive.
For info about the race and to read some of the past race reviews follow this link:

The Run For One Planet

From an e-mail we recieved this past week:

I am reaching out to your running group in the hopes that you would like to be a small part of an amazing journey.

Matt Hill and Stephanie Tait left Vancouver, BC on May 4th that started an 18,000 km journey that will take them around North America. The Run For One Planet is a carbon neutral year-long run around the continent to inspire environmental action. The goal to run one marathon a day, to inspire 1 million environmental actions for the earth, and to raise 1 million dollars for the Run For One Planet Foundation. To do this, they will be running 18,000 km into communities, towns, and cities where they will run, speak, and inspire people to take simple daily actions, individually and corporately, to make a positive difference for the health of our planet.

With that in mind, Matt and Stephanie are looking to join up with running groups along the way. They will be arriving in Barrie soon, and are looking to get out for a run either on July 29th. So if the Barrie Road Runners can see an opportunity to get a run together, Matt and Stephanie would be more than happy to come along.

I thank you for taking the time to read this and look forward to hopefully a positive response that will lead to a wonderful run later this week.

we hope to have more information as to what time they plan on being in Barrie soon.

Hills, Hills and then some real hills

This past Saturday saw 5 of our group running (and a lot of walking) the Creemore Vertical Challenge. The name is very apt for this race as it seems that most of it is on hills that most normal people wouldn't attempt walking. But a good day was had by all with Oliver Owens (2:21) and Clarence Wang (2:45?) completing the 25k and Oliver itching for more. The 50k of torture saw Scott Whynot (5:34), Kevin O'Neill (4:52?) in 7th overall and 2nd in age and Keith Lascelles (4:48) 5th and 1st in age. A well organized race, all be it tough. And some nice swag at the end.
A good training run for the Jay Mountain Marathon in 3 weeks.

Creemore Vertical Challenge

This Saturday is the Creemore Vertical Challenge 25k & 50k. Apparently an extremely difficult course over roads and trails around Creemore, climbing the escarpment twice per loop. Scott Whynot is living up to his name and joining Kevin O'Neill and Keith Lascelles in attempting the 50k, while Oliver Owens is expecting to do the 25k. This wil be good training for the Jay Marathon in 3 weeks. Good luck guys.

Canada Day Races

There were 2 "local" events that featured many of our runners this past July 1st. IN Algonquin Park The HBC Run For Canada 10k race was a huge success (nice shirts guys), results can be found here.

In the 50k Kevin O'Neill was unable to maintain his 50k winning streak, but still managed a respectable 8th place in 4:12. Keith Lascelles was 9th in 4:15.

The Pocono Run For The Red Marathon Race Report

Some people listen to advice, some don't. I guess I am one of the latter. Going into the Pocono Marathon on Sunday in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. I had read the reviews on MarathonGuide.com and listened to others about taking it easy for the first half so that I would not suffer from the downhills on this race. My goal should have been to run a good race, not go sub 3. But as stuborn as I am I decided to go for it.
The Pocono Marathon is a point to point course starting at about 2000' in Tobyhanna and then dropping 1500' to finish in Stroudsburg. A beautifull course through rural countryside and small towns was well supported by volunteers and sparse crowd support.
Sunday morning came early so that we could meet the buses at the local high school in Stroudsburg. At 6:30 they left for the start line. On the bus I got talking to a young guy from Tuscon who was doing his 2nd Marathon and hoping for a sub 3 hour, how about that me too. Prior to the start there was about an hour waiting in the comfort of a local school, nice, as it was rather chilly outside. The race started on time and after a km or 2 I was runnng with a group of 3 or 4 others all looking for a sub 3 time. The pace was brisk and the course rolling. We were running well under sub 3 pace, but it felt ok (famous last words). At about 10 miles we ran into the town of Mount Pocono and the biggest downhill of the race approached and instead of backing off a little I "took advantage' of the hill. That wasn't that bad. This was followed by a beautful run through a heavily forested small road before hitting another main road just before the half way mark. At the half I was under sub 3 pace (1:29) but the down hills had already taken their toll and I knew my goal would have to be adjusted. A dull pain had started just above my right knee in the lower quads, something I had felt near the end of the 52k trail race 2 weeks earlier. By 16 miles the pain was more intense and I was ready to stop, I decided to walk to the next aid station which turned out to be the 18 mile mark. The more I walked the worse it seemed to get, so after arriving at the aid station I quit. Told the personnel there that all I wanted was a ride back to the start and sat down. I sat down for 1.5 hours before getting the word that it would probably at least another 1.5 hours before I could get a ride as all the roads on the course were closed and no vehicles were allowed through other than emergency vehicles. So at that point I decided I might as well start walking. So for another 8 miles I walked (hobbled). It is quite humbling to have the back of the packers pass you, but it gives a much better appreciation for what they are doing and for the dedication of all the volunteers who were still there and cheering me on, even though I felt I didn't deserve or want it.
Meanwhile back at the High School Stadium finish line, my wife was worried sick and eventually got the organizers concerned as someone who was expected in at 3 hours + was still out there after 5 hours. They sent people out looking for me, they found me at the last mile marker, struggling along and accompanied me back. By this time I had decided that I've got this far I might as well finish and get my medal. I guess in my absence I had become a bit of a celebrity as everyone knew who I was now and cheered me in to finish. Joan was especially happy to see me. I even tried to run (not very well) around the track. A special note of thanks should go out to Art & Paula from Stroudsburg who kept Joan company and went out looking for me and all the organizers who did what they could.
Leesons learned? Yes I think so...
A new appreciation for the back of the Pack runners, who not only put a lot more time out there, but see the course in a different way. I got to see a bald eagle flying overhead while feeling sorry for my self.
Hopefully people will read this and take heed of advice they get about running and not be a stubborn ass like me.

Results from May 4th Weekend.

Lots of racing this past weekend with some great results. Kevin O'Neill and Krista Bolyea both broke 37 minutes in the Sporting Life 10k (36:03 & 36:45) and Jurgen Schubert broke 36 minutes (35:04), lots of other great results from Barrie and area runners, too many to list here.
In Cinncinati, Ohio Ron Leigh ran the Flying Pig in 3:26 and Sylvie Phillips 4:06. Sue Leigh ran the 10k in 1:10, great results.
In The Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, Joan Lascelles finished the 5k in 32 minutes, Keith Lascelles had a discouraging race walking injured the last 10 miles of the marathon to finish in 6 hours.(see race report)

The Human Limit

The following article appears on an online edition of Blue Ridge Outdoors.
Very interesting at how far a human can push themselves and how much damage is being done.

THE-HUMAN-LIMIT

USATF Proposes Helmet Rule

USATF Proposes Helmet Rule
If USA Track & Field has its way, we could all be wearing helmets in our next 5-K or marathon. (Well, at least the larger ones.)

A proposed amendment to the 2009 Rules of Competition, being debated by the governing body's Long Distance Running Division, states that...

Persons in any USATF-sanctioned running event with 500 or more participants shall be required to wear a protective helmet that meets or exceeds the CPSC (Consumer Products Safety Commission) standards, as set by the federal government. The helmet must be securely fastened to the participant's head and must not block or impair the participant's field of vision. The helmet must be worn at all times during the event.

Failure to adhere to any of these requirement will result in penalties up to and including disqualification.

Delegates to this year's USATF convention will debate and vote on the measure when they meet in November.

In a statement, the governing body said it was acting out a concern for runners' safety -- and in recognition of liability fears.

"Races are getting more and more crowded," said USATF spokeswoman Isabella Adler in a recent conference call with reporters. "It's only a matter of time before someone gets jostled, falls, and hits their head on a curb. If that happens, the race director has blood on his hands -- literally."

Adler suggested that runners might look to cycling helmets, if the rule is approved. With advances in technology and design, Adler noted, today's helmets are light, comfortable, and well-ventilated.

"You hardly know you're wearing a helmet at all," she said, noting that she has taken several "test runs" while wearing a cycling helmet made by Bell.

Officials drew parallels between the helmet mandate and USATF's earlier rule banning headphones and portable music devices in races.

"Just like with the headphone rule," said Adler, "it's a simple matter of safety."
